Common Questions About Therapy

Finding the right support shouldn't be confusing. We’ve answered the most common questions from our Southfield and Grand Blanc clients below.

Frequently asked questions

Deciding to start therapy is a significant step. Whether you are curious about the mechanics of EMDR or just wondering how to prepare for your first visit in Mid or Southeast Michigan, we want to provide the clarity you need to feel confident in your decision.

Getting Started & Logistics

We offer both. We have physical offices in Southfield and Grand Blanc for in-person sessions, and we provide secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth options for residents throughout Michigan.

Standard individual sessions are approximately 45–53 minutes. Specialized treatments like EMDR or Play Therapy intake may occasionally require longer blocks, which we will coordinate with you in advance.

It is entirely based on your convenience. Our Southfield office serves the Metro Detroit area (Birmingham, Royal Oak), while our Grand Blanc office serves Mid-Michigan (Fenton, Flint, Holly). Scott Turner rotates between both locations.

The Therapeutic Process

The first session is a “get-to-know-you” period. We’ll discuss what brought you in, your history, and your goals. It’s also an opportunity for you to see if Scott’s “mission-focused” style feels like the right fit for you.

A: Every journey is different. Some clients find relief in 8–12 sessions using targeted tools like CBT, while others processing deep-rooted trauma or addiction may benefit from longer-term support. We set milestones together to track your progress.

Absolutely. Your privacy is protected by law and by our professional ethics. Whether you are a local veteran or a high-profile professional, what we discuss in our Southfield or Grand Blanc office stays between us.

Specialties & Approaches

A CADC is a specialized credential in Michigan that requires thousands of hours of supervised experience specifically in addiction. Unlike general counseling, a CADC-certified therapist has the deep clinical training necessary to treat the complexities of substance abuse, offering a more targeted and effective path to recovery.

Drawing from Scott’s military background and 20 years of practice, this approach means we prioritize results. We don’t just “talk”—we identify the mission (your goal) and use specific tools like DBT or EMDR to achieve it.

Yes. We provide the structured, professional documentation and evidence-based training required for most legal or workplace mandates.

Yes. As a veteran-led practice, we specialize in helping fellow service members navigate PTSD, combat stress, and the transition to civilian life. We understand the unique culture of the military and provide a direct, mission-focused approach to trauma recovery for veterans across Mid Michigan and Metro Detroit.

Children often lack the words to express complex emotions. In our Southfield office, we use play therapy—utilizing toys, art, and games—as a child’s natural language. This allows them to process trauma or anxiety and learn self-calming methods in a way that feels safe and intuitive, rather than intimidating.

At our Southfield and Grand Blanc office, we use EMDR primarily to help the brain “reprocess” traumatic memories so they no longer trigger a fight-or-flight response. DBT is more skills-focused, teaching you how to manage intense emotions and improve relationships in the present. Many of our Genessee and Oakland County clients benefit from a combination of both.
